Sunset Cruises in Koh Samui — Evening Boat Trips & Dinner Cruises

Sunset Cruises in Koh Samui — Evening Boat Trips & Dinner Cruises

Sunset cruises are the most requested evening activity on Koh Samui, and for good reason. The Gulf of Thailand gives us calm water almost every day between November and April, and the light between 17:30 and 18:30 turns the southern island cluster — Koh Tan, Koh Madsum (Pig Island), Five Islands — into the kind of view travellers remember years later. This guide covers every sunset tour we actually run, the real prices, the real durations, and the honest trade-offs between longtail, speedboat, and sailing-cruise options.

When the sun sets on Koh Samui

The sunset time on Koh Samui shifts by roughly 40 minutes across the year. In early April it happens around 18:20. In June it pushes to 18:45. December and January bring earlier sunsets around 17:55. Our tours are scheduled backwards from these times so that you are already on the water, anchored at the viewing spot, 30 minutes before the sun touches the horizon. Pickup times at your hotel adjust seasonally — expect collection between 14:30 and 16:00 depending on the month and where you are staying on the island.

Chaweng and Lamai hotels are 45 to 60 minutes by road from the south-coast piers where most sunset tours depart. Bophut, Maenam and Choeng Mon are 30 to 45 minutes. If you are staying on the quieter south side — Laem Sor, Taling Ngam, the south side of Koh Samui — you might be only 10 minutes from the pier. We factor pickup timing into every booking confirmation so your driver knows exactly when to arrive.

The three boat types and what each one actually gives you

1. Traditional wooden longtail — the most photogenic

The longtail (เรือหางยาว) is the wooden boat with the long drive shaft that has been working Thai waters for generations. On Koh Samui, the longtail sunset tours leave from south Koh Samui pier on the south coast — about 25 minutes from Chaweng by road. The ride is slow and low to the water, which means you feel the sea rather than just ride over it. Swells are absorbed by the boat's length and weight, so longtails are stable even on days when a speedboat would punch through chop.

The Sunset Pig Island & Koh Tan Evening Boat Tour is our most-booked longtail option. It is a 4-hour trip from south Koh Samui pier, including a snorkel stop at Koh Tan, a visit to Koh Madsum for the sunset light on the beach, and a simple Thai dinner on board or on a quiet beach depending on conditions. Price is from ฿1,200 per person (child discount available). Fresh fruit and water are included; soft drinks and beer can be bought on board.

Best for: Couples on a budget, families with kids under 10, first-time boat travellers, photographers.
Duration: 4 hours
Departure pier: the south side of Koh Samui (south coast)
Price range: From ฿1,200 per adult

2. Sailing junk cruise — the romantic option with dinner

The Romantic Sunset Sailing Cruise from Koh Samui is a coastal junk boat tour with a proper buffet dinner and live music option. It departs from Bophut pier on the north coast, which puts you on a different stretch of water entirely — you sail along the Big Buddha coastline, past Choeng Mon, and finish the sunset view off Fisherman's Village. The junk boat is much larger than a longtail, with shade on the main deck, a bar, and a full kitchen on board.

This is the option we recommend for anniversary dinners, proposals, and honeymoons. The dinner is a Thai buffet — typically tom yum goong, massaman curry, fried rice, grilled seafood, fresh fruit. Drinks are extra and include cocktails, beer, and wine. Price starts at ฿2,200 per adult, which reflects the meal, bar service, and the larger boat's operating cost.

Best for: Anniversaries, honeymoons, groups that want food and drinks together.
Duration: 3 hours
Departure pier: Bophut (north coast)
Price range: From ฿2,200 per adult

3. Electric longtail — silent and zero-emission

The Private Electric Longtail to Pig Island & Koh Tan is a newer option we added after Will (our founder) tested it personally. The boat is a traditional longtail hull fitted with a silent electric motor. No fumes, no engine noise. You hear the water against the hull, the gulls, and voices on other boats in the distance — nothing else. It changes the experience completely.

This is a private charter only, meaning you book the whole boat for your group. Capacity is up to 8 passengers. Price starts at ฿2,100 per person with a minimum booking, or as a full private charter. The sunset option includes an anchored stop between Koh Tan and Koh Madsum during golden hour.

Best for: Travellers who have already done a standard boat tour and want something different, sensitive to noise, small private groups.
Duration: 3-4 hours
Departure pier: the south side of Koh Samui
Price range: From ฿2,100 per person

What you see on a Koh Samui sunset tour

The visual highlight of every sunset tour on Samui is the channel between Koh Tan and Koh Madsum (Pig Island). The two islands sit roughly 2 kilometres apart off the south coast, and from the water between them you get a clean western horizon with no land in the way. Captains drop anchor here because the water is calm in the lee of Koh Tan, and there is no boat traffic after the day tours head back around 16:30.

Twenty minutes before sunset, the light goes from yellow to gold. The sand on the beaches of Koh Tan and Koh Madsum turns pink. Longtails returning to the south side of Koh Samui pass across the horizon and become silhouettes. Fifteen minutes before sunset, the colour shifts to orange and red. By this time you should have your camera set and be watching, not scrolling through photos. The actual drop of the sun takes only 90 seconds — about 2.5 times faster than sunsets at higher latitudes because Koh Samui sits near the equator.

After the sun hits the horizon, the sky keeps changing for another 20 minutes. Pink fades to lavender, then to deep blue. This second phase — the blue hour — is when couples tend to slow down and just sit. The boats all stay anchored through this part. Then the captain starts the engine and we motor back to the pier, usually arriving around 19:30 for longtail tours and 20:00 for sailing dinners.

Routes explained — what you visit before the sunset

Most sunset tours combine the sunset view with activities earlier in the afternoon. This keeps the trip value high and gives you a full experience rather than just a boat ride. Here is what the different routes typically include:

  • the south side of Koh Samui departure (longtail): Snorkel at Koh Tan (30-40 minutes), visit Koh Madsum to see the pigs on the beach, return to Koh Tan for sunset anchoring, dinner on board or on beach.
  • Bophut departure (junk boat): Sail along Big Buddha coastline, pass Choeng Mon and Plai Laem, anchor off Fisherman's Village for sunset with buffet dinner served on deck.
  • Private electric (the south side of Koh Samui): Flexible — you choose the order. Typical route is snorkel at Koh Tan, visit Pig Island, slow-paddle back to a quiet anchor point for sunset with drinks.

What to bring, what to wear, what to leave at the hotel

Bring: light sweater or shawl (wind picks up after sunset, especially on sailing tours), reef-safe sunscreen if you are planning to snorkel, a waterproof bag for your phone, cash in small bills (20, 50, 100 THB) for drinks on board, a camera with a real lens if you care about the photos — phone cameras struggle with the sunset dynamic range.

Wear: swimwear under your clothes if you want to snorkel, sandals that can get wet, a hat with a chin strap (the wind on longtails is real). Avoid loose skirts or dresses on longtails — climbing in and out of the boat from the water is awkward.

Leave behind: expensive watches, heavy cameras without waterproof protection, laptops, anything you cannot afford to have splashed. Every sunset tour has some spray and the occasional unexpected wave.

Honest disclaimers: weather, seasickness, and what we cancel for

We cancel sunset tours when the wave forecast exceeds 1.2 metres, when winds are above 25 knots, or when there is lightning within 30 km of Koh Samui. During the monsoon months (late October through early December), cancellations are more common — expect to have a backup plan or flexible booking dates. Between December and April, cancellations are rare but still possible.

Seasickness on sunset tours is less common than on morning speedboat trips. The longtails are stable, the sailing junks are large enough to absorb waves, and by late afternoon the wind typically drops. If you know you get motion sick, take a tablet one hour before pickup, stay on the deck with wind in your face, and look at the horizon when you feel queasy. Avoid alcohol until after the boat is anchored.

Private sunset charters and special occasions

We handle proposals, anniversaries, and birthdays on private sunset charters most weeks. The setup requires 48 hours notice and includes whatever combination you want: flower petals on the deck, champagne or sparkling wine on ice, a cake collected from a Bophut bakery, a photographer on board for discreet capture, a specific menu for dinner. None of this is advertised on the product pages — tell us directly when you book and we arrange it.

The most requested private sunset package pairs the Electric Longtail with a reserved beach-side dinner at a the south side of Koh Samui seafood restaurant after. Total cost runs between 8,500 and 12,000 THB depending on group size and dinner choices. For larger groups of 8-12, the sailing junk () can be booked privately starting around 22,000 THB.

Booking timing and availability

Peak season for sunset tours is December through February, especially the two weeks around Christmas and New Year. During this period we recommend booking 5-7 days in advance. The longtail tours fill up faster than the sailing junk because there are fewer boats and smaller group sizes. Shoulder season (March, April, June, September) is usually bookable 1-2 days ahead. Rainy season (October, November) is wide open but the cancellation rate is higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a sunset cruise on Koh Samui last?

Between 2.5 and 4 hours depending on the tour. Our most popular longtail sunset tour is 4 hours. The sailing junk dinner cruise is 3 hours. Pickup from your hotel is included in the total trip time.

What time do sunset cruises depart?

Pickup from your hotel is between 14:30 and 16:00 depending on season and your hotel location. Boats leave pier around 16:00-16:30. This puts you on the water 30-60 minutes before actual sunset (which is around 18:20 in April, 18:45 in June, 17:55 in December).

Are drinks and food included?

Fresh fruit and water are included on every tour. Soft drinks, beer and cocktails can be bought on board. The Romantic Sunset Sailing Cruise includes a full Thai buffet dinner in the price. The longtail tour includes a simple Thai meal.

Is it suitable for people who get seasick?

Yes — sunset tours are the most stable time of day. Winds drop in the late afternoon. Longtails are very stable at low speed, and the sailing junk is a large boat that absorbs waves. If you are prone to motion sickness, take a tablet one hour before pickup and look at the horizon, not the water.

Can I book a private sunset charter for a proposal or anniversary?

Yes, we arrange these most weeks. Tell us 48 hours in advance. We can organize flower petals on deck, champagne, a cake from a Bophut bakery, discreet photography, and a specific menu. The Electric Longtail is our most popular option for private sunset bookings.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We cancel tours when wave forecasts exceed 1.2 metres, wind is above 25 knots, or there is lightning within 30 km. Full refund or free reschedule to another day in your trip. The monsoon months (late October-early December) see more cancellations; December-April cancellations are rare.

Do you pick up from my hotel?

Yes, hotel pickup is included anywhere on Koh Samui. We use air-conditioned minivans. Pickup time is confirmed the day before your tour by text or email. Chaweng hotels get picked up earliest because they are furthest from the south pier.
